Concerning the rapid spread of new coronavirus variant, on 5 January 2021, the Vietnamese prime minister announced the suspension of all flights from countries seriously affected with the new coronavirus variant – specifically the U.K. and South Africa – to Vietnam.
WHY THIS MATTERS
The new restriction of international flights from the U.K. and South Africa to Vietnam with immediate effect may cause certain obstacles for businesses to mobilise their foreign personnel originating from these countries into Vietnam. Given that the list of jurisdictions subject to that suspension shall be updated frequently depending on the situation of the new coronavirus variant in that jurisdiction, businesses should keep themselves updated regarding such changes so that they might adjust their mobility plans accordingly.
Suspension of International Flights from U.K. and South Africa to Vietnam Given Threat of New Coronavirus Variant
On 5 January 2021, the Vietnamese prime minister issued Directive No.01/CT-TTg to enhance COVID-19 preventive measures. In the Directive, the prime minister requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to suspend all flights from countries or territories affected by the new coronavirus variant and where the situation of the new variant is complicated, namely the U.K. and South Africa. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will co-operate with the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Transportation to work out the final list of countries seriously affected with the coronavirus variant to implement the suspension accordingly.
KPMG NOTE
The Vietnamese competent authorities are likely to update the list of jurisdictions subject to the suspension with no advance notice, depending on the country’s evaluation of the developing situation of the new coronavirus variant in the jurisdictions. Businesses are recommended to stay up-to-date with the changes to inform any necessary adjustments to their mobility plans.
